Summer to School
by Ryan Miller, LMFT
Summer is in full swing, but there is a faint hint of school being back in session. As the fall semester approaches let’s chat about friendly transitions and how to start this school year off on the right foot.
First, parents should always encourage children how education is essential; how it is actually part of everyday life. Positive talk about school will set the tone for eager students who want to learn and be successful in being challenged to grow.
Second, take time this summer to be reflective about some of your fun activities you are doing as a family. Nothing is more satisfying than connecting with each other and sharing how a collective moment touched everyone. Being able to pause and reflect will help parents and children recognize how they are “together” and anticipate future memories. When families are able to journey life together it makes it easier on each member to recognize they are all moving forward together. Once everyone feels connected, starting a new season will not feel as daunting because you have each other.
Last but not least, communicate with each other what goals or challenges you see ahead in the school year. Having an open conversation about the “scary” things or “exciting” things will help everyone feel heard. Again, this piggy backs off the idea of connecting with each other. Being able to talk about the big or small issues will allow family members a chance to be heard. There is nothing more powerful than encouraging someone to use their voice.
So, enjoy the summer and hold on to the happy moments and each other; by doing so you will be able to start a new chapter with a full heart and open mind.
